[edit] Biography

Vrael was the last leader of the Dragon Riders prior to their Downfall. He dueled with Galbatorix before the gates of Doru Araeba, but hesitated to kill him, and Galbatorix seized the opportunity, and wounded Vrael in the side. Vrael fled to Utgard Mountain to rest and regain his strength, but Galbatorix followed him, and after kicking him "in the fork of his legs", Galbatorix beheaded him. Galbatorix then declared himself king, following Vrael's death.

[edit] Powers

As the Leader of the Riders, Vrael was the most powerful of the elite order. Brom described him as "ancient and wise" and said that he was the only one who could resist the Forsworn. Vrael was an extraordinary gifted swordsman, with amazing speed and strength. According to the old storyteller, he was able to defeat Galbatorix when no one else could, and the young Rider had to defeat him using underhanded trickery.

[edit] Race

Until recently, there hadn't been a definite reference to Vrael's race. It was most commonly believed that he was an elf, given his amazing prowess, and hints indicating that he was among the oldest of the Riders (at this time, human Riders hadn't existed long enough for there to be a human Rider older than 1000). Some, however, argued that Vrael could have been a human who, over many centuries of bonding with his dragon, gained the speed and strength of an elf. In an interview in 2009, Paolini stated that Vrael was in fact an elf.

[edit] Speculation

This makes sense with what Oromis said about Galbatorix making sure to hunt down and personally kill all of his mentors. Also, when Vrael was fighting Galbatorix the first time, he hesitated; a sign they might have at one time been close, or simply a sign that Vrael thought that he shouldn't kill Galbatorix, but rather spare him, or even just that he believed everyone should have a second chance or he disliked killing. It is also noted in Eragon, the movie, that there is a remaining white Rider's sword and some think this to be Vrael's sword.
