Shadow Birds, by Christopher Paolini

Not to confuse with The Beast.

Sundavrblaka (meaning "shadow-flapper" in the Ancient Language) were large owl-like creatures that Eragon encountered on the isle of Vroengard. He returned after Galbatorix's death and using the name of the Ancient Language, he named them "Sundavrblaka". Like the burrow grubs, they were affected by the poison (radiation) that corrupted and warped the wildlife on Vroengard to adopt unnatural characteristics.

Physical appearance[]

They had barbed plumes and mottled faces. Eragon mistook them for a kind of wraith at first, since they had the ability to hide their bodies and appear as shadows. Their chatter reminded him of squirrels.[1]
