Promises, New and Old is the 77th chapter of Inheritance. It takes the point of view of Eragon.
Summary
Saphira, Eragon and the elves prepare for the departure. Elves have decided to accompany them, as they couldn't bring themselves to abandon the Eldunari and the eggs. Then Eragon and Saphira leave for Vroengard. They spend the evening in Urgal village near the Fläm lake feasting. Then they speak with the Herndal and tell them of the plan to hold games between Urgals as well as other races , to forestall future conflicts. The Herndal agree, though they must still consult the clans upon the time of the contests. However, they do not believe it will put an end to wars. Then he tells them of the other part of the plan(to include them in the Riders) and they agree. Afterwards, he and Saphira leave for Vroengard, where he gives the shadow birds and the burrow grubs names in the Ancient Language. At dawn they enter the Vault of Souls and secure the eggs and Eldunari for the journey and depart, along with Cuaroc. They pass over Palancar Valley, the Bay of Fundor, Ceuon and then arrive at Du Weldenvarden, from where they go to Ellesmere, where they feast again.
After the feast, Eragon goes to Menoa Tree. He asks him what she wants in exchange for the brightsteel. She tells him to go...
Then Eragon read books and scrolls from Galbatorix's library for 3 days, while Saphira is away with Firnen.
Under the Menoa Tree Eragon forged a new packt between the Dragons and the Riders to include Dwarves and Urgals.
During another feast, Eragon excuses himself and, while he walks among the celebrating people, he sees Sloan and talks to him. He gives him back his sight. However, Sloan still can't talk to Katrina or Ismira. Then he says his goodbye
