Naegling
From Inheriwiki, the ever-growing Inheritance database
Naegling was Oromis' sword. It was bronze, closely matching Glaedr's golden scales. During their years in Du Weldenvarden, Oromis and Glaedr, as well as several other elves, stored every bit of excess energy within the gem, a golden diamond, on the pommel. For an example Oromis stated in Brisingr that there was enough energy within Naegling to "shift an entire mountain". Oromis used Naegling when dueling Eragon, and had it at hand when Glaedr returned from his fight with Saphira. This sword was lost during the battle between Oromis and Murtagh resulting in Oromis death, as Oromis had placed wards around it to protect himself. The sword was most likely taken by Murtagh after the battle and was put in Galbatorix's collection of swords from the Riders he'd killed, or was retrieved by the elves and kept for safekeeping. Some believe that Glaedr, from within his Eldunari, will allow Eragon to claim the sword, and then let Eragon store the energy in the Belt of Beloth the wise or Brisingr since he needs the energy to defeat Galbatorix.
[edit] Real-world connections
Naegling is the name of the sword that belonged to Beowulf, a legendary Scandinavian hero, and is likely where Christopher Paolini chose the name from.
