Morgothal, brother to Urûr, was the god of fire of the dwarves' religion.[1] As such, he was also the patron god of the smiths. Following their death, dwarves are said to dine in Morgothal's hall.

Legends[]

Relation with Urûr[]

According to the priest Gannel, Morgothal and his brother, Urûr, god of the sky , loved each other so much that neither could exist without each other.[1] Thus, Morgothal's palace burned in the sky and Urûr fed his brother to keep him alive.[1]

Creation of the Races[]

Following Helzvog's creation of the dwarves, Urûr and Morgothal combined their knowledge and spawned the dragons.[1]

Description[]

Morgothal is never described directly, however from various oaths said by dwarves, he was mentioned to have a black beard[2] and wield a hammer

Symbolism[]

The dwarves described Morgothal as having a a burning a palace in the sky during the day,[1] in addition to his forge sending sparks into the night sky,[1] representing the sun and the stars respectively.

Real-World Connections[]

The name Morgothal is similar to the name of the Enemy of J.R.R. Tolkien's universe, Melkor, later named Morgoth. Morgoth's associations with Balrogs, demons of shadow and fire, intensify the similarities, as Morgothal was the god of fire. Morgoth was also the creator of dragons. Morgothal's hall may also be a reference to the Halls of Mandos, where Morgoth was imprisoned for a long time.
