Merlock was a member of the Traders who generally visited Carvahall every year. He specialized in trinkets and pieces of jewelry. It was he whom Eragon went to try to sell and identify Saphira's egg in Eragon. Merlock told them that the "stone" was hollow and that there might be other people who would like to spend their money on items like this. However, Merlock did not buy the egg because he said he didn't know the value and didn't want to spend the time looking for someone who might want to buy it.
