Eragon is leaving for Ellesméra and Orik is returning to him his armor from the Battle Under Farthen Dûr. Saphira's armor is to be kept at Farthen Dur. When Eragon goes to put on the helmet, Orik says that by putting on the helmet, he would be a part of the Dûrgrimst Ingeitum. Eragon pauses, contemplating the repercussions there could be to affiliating more with the Dwarves when he is already becoming more associated with individual factions than he would like. Saphira reminds him it could just be a sign of appreciation for Saphira's promise to fix Isidar Mithrim. Eragon puts on the helmet. Orik tells Eragon that they are foster brothers, he can attend Dwarvan councils and Eragon could be buried with the dwarves if he so chooses.
Eragon then sees Nasuada and Arya walking towards them. He realizes he hadn't consulted with either of them and fears they will be upset. Nasuada expresses understanding, saying that now he is tied to all three races, probably for the better. Before Eragon enters the dark tunnel leading to Tarnag he reflects on how he is leaving the comfort of the Varden and certainty, again being thrown into the unknown.
