Roran stands inside his tent as Katrina helps him to get outfitted for the upcoming battle in Feinster. She places on him first his jerkin, then his greaves, next his braces, then his shirt of mail and finally a leather arming cap. As she proceeds once again to his cot, he stops her, assuring her that he will be fine and suggesting that she check in on Elain, whose child is overdue. Katrina asks if he must really march in the front line and he asks whom she would send in his place. "Anyone at all," she responds. She ties a red kerchief to his sword belt as a symbol of her pride for him.
They kiss and she brings him his shield and spear. They bid each other their farewells and Roran raises his shield, then exits his tent. He reports to Jormundur, then decides to stand next to Yarbog. The Urgal states that it is a "good day for battle" and Roran agrees. A horn sounds and everyone runs forward, beginning the Siege of Feinster.
