as You know, one thing bothered me throughout the end of Eldest. How was Murtagh able to hit Eragon with a ball of compressed air when Eragon had wards to protect him from spells? The answer was so simple that I almost laughed.

He let go of his wards in shock when he discovered Murtagh. He might not have figured it out, but he did.

However, that sent me thinking. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Murtagh would have been able to hit Eragon with that ball of air even if he had maintained his wards, because technically, he didn’t cast a spell on Eragon at all. He cast the spell on some air. All he did to Eragon was to throw the ball at him. You can make your wards protect you from spells, but you can’t make one to “protect” yourself from air. Aside from not being able to breathe, though that does make it worse, the strain would kill even Eragon-Elf within minutes. It’s just too hard. The only downside to this spell is that Galbatorix has already realized it.

There are several other spells that are very surprising to the opposing player – in this case, Galbatorix, Murtagh, or other enemy magicians. Such as, what if, instead of simply blocking it, Eragon sends Thorn’s fire right back at him? No matter how they can be thwarted, wards do have physical limits, and Eragon would not be casting a spell at Thorn or Murtagh, which are really the only people the wards are supposed to protect. Galbatorix, being arrogant, would probably not bother to advise Murtagh to block those kinds of spells, and Murtagh wants to give Eragon an advantage, knowing that Eragon would never kill him. And, Galbatorix would never make him swear to do anything to destroy the entire enemy because that would distract Murtagh from his most important task: capturing Eragon and Saphira. That means that there’s one road – or rather alleyway – for Eragon to take to defeat the Empire once and for all.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 205.208.227.55 (TalkContributionsLogs).
