a falchion

A falchion, is a curved, one-sided sword. It was used by some soldiers in the Varden. After Eragon lost his blade Zar'roc to Murtagh in the battle of the burning planes, Fredric, Weapon master of the Varden, equipped him with this sword to replace his lost one. Eragon later fought off Murtagh with the falchion. Eragon used the Falchion until his own blade, Brisingr (sword), a true sword of a Dragon Rider, was forged by him with the help of Rhunön.

Description

The falchion was made to be held with the blade and crossguard perpendicular to the ground. The middle is softer than the outer edge as to allow it to bend and flex during battle without it fracturing.

Real-world connections

A falchion is a one-handed, single-edged sword of European origin, whose design is reminiscent of the Persian scimitar and the Chinese dao (刀) which has similar appearances as a polearm. The blade of the falchion is convex and is narrowed at the top, it is designed this way to look intimidating and scare enemies.
