Eldest (movie)
From Inheriwiki, the ever-growing Inheritance database
Eldest is a possible sequel to Eragon.
20th Century Fox currently holds the rights from Knopf to produce the sequel Eldest, and there have been rumors of it being released in Summer of 2011; however, this information is currently uncertain as they are making no statement to support the claim.
When Christopher Paolini was asked if there was a chance of making an Eldest movie at the Eragon movie's premiere, he answered, "I think we'll know after the opening weekend."
[edit] Changes That May Affect an Adaptation of Eldest
- When Eragon fights Durza in the movie, it is said that he was using dark magic, which is never mentioned in the books, Durza and Eragon fought in the dwarf city not on dragons.
- King Hrothgar was hardly mentioned/shown and was the size and shape of a regular human male, not a dwarf.
- Eragon's back was scarred by Durza's sword, but no mention was made, but if you look closely Durza does actually strike him with a sword in the movie. This was the main obstacle for Eragon throughout Eldest (book) and concerned the entire free world of Alagaësia.
- The Rider's swords were also completely left out. Later in the cycle, (in Eldest and Brisingr) the swords become very important, as they help reveal that Murtaugh is Eragon's brother, the making of Eragon's sword Brisingr takes up a whole chapter, and could still be important later on, because they got the brightsteel from the Menoa tree, which could turn into a whole new problem.
- Key characters such as the Twins, Solembum and Elva, were edited out of the theatrical release of Eragon movie, while the characters of Angela, for the most part, and Jeod were omitted entirely. Since it was very hard to tell who Orik was without these characters, it would be extremely difficult to make an adaption of Eldest that would follow the book's plot. Angela was in there, but was just a fortune teller, and not really the eccentric and important character.
- Eragon never received the ring Aren from Brom.
- Roran's relationship with and betrothal to Katrina was completely omitted,
- In the movie, Yazuac was completely removed.
- Teirm was also removed and therefore Angela's fortune-telling was moved to the river town of Daret.
- The Ra'zac were described as hunch-backed cloaked figures with clicking voices and silent steps. They were also killed in the first movie and not the third as was supposed to happen. Plus Brom killed one while Eragon killed the other instead of Eragon, Saphira and Roran doing the dirty job. We have yet to know whether the Lethrblaka will appear. Brom did mention that there might be more of the Ra'zac.
- The Urgals were men in the movie. They were missing their horns, hair, their tall stature, and basically, beast-like outlook. In the book Urgal's language, "hornless" is a terrible insult to a Urgal. The movie's Urgals were, literally and figuratively, hornless. Also, in Eragon (book), Kull were chasing Eragon, Saphira, Murtagh and Arya. They were not just Urgals.
- In the movie Arya was kind and open to Eragon right from the start, even though she was tortured by Durza for weeks. In the book she was extremely suspicious and hostile at first, like an Elf was described to be.
- According to Eragon (book), the city of Tronjhiem was in a hollow mountain and thus underground.
- Eragon didn't leave for Ellesméra with Arya, and Oromis (The Cripple who is Whole) did not contact Eragon (Eragon left to see the Elves in "Eldest").
- Arya had black hair in the book, and in the movie she had strawberry blonde hair.
- The Isidar Mithrim (Star Sapphire) in Tronjhiem is not broken by Arya and Saphira when they help to distract Durza during his fight between Eragon. In the movie, there is no Star Sapphire. In Brisingr, the Star Sapphire holds extreme significance with the 13 dwarf clans.
- The dwarves were barely seen, if at all. This is a problem because later they hold much power with the Varden and Eragon. This is especially true with Eragon's invitation and acceptance into Orik's clan.
- Saphira grows almost full sized the instant she was first in the air in the movie. In "Eragon" she grew steadily, like most living things. Also, it was said that Dragons were immense in size with fire capable of burning and melting rock with little effort and magic that, when provoked exceeds that of any other race. The movie made Saphira, almost an adult, no bigger than a large bear instead of Dinosaur-sized like in the book. Also, they made Saphira way too weak as she fought the dark magic monster with full strength and not be able to break its bite, but Eragon did it with a single shot even though he was still not very much stronger than the average farmer, just a fair bit more powerful. Saphira's fire was also immensly reduced in power and her magic was weak as well, as Brom's Tomb was made into glass and not daimond, so it would be interesting to see how they are going to make the Battle of the Burning Plains work out with Saphira fighting and winning against much of Galbatorix's army when is very small and weak in the movie.
- Arya did not have pointed ears in the movie Eragon, so it will be difficult to have any pointy-eared elves in Ellesméra in an Eldest movie.
- There was no training in magic in the movie, and Eragon just suddenly seemed to know every spell. For example, when he used magic for the first time he passed out from exhaustion after the spell, but when he fought the Ra'zac just a few hours later with no extra training, he didn't seem affected by it at all. Then, when he went to rescue Arya, he somehow knew the spell to open the door. However, Brom had not told him anything about magic.
- Brom did not teach Eragon to block his mind from mental attacks or to use his mind to infiltrate other minds.
- There was no mention that it was impossible to lie in the Ancient Language.
- Albreich and Baldor were taken away in the beginning of the movie; they have larger roles in Eldest.
- They all but forgot Nasuada and Roran. Also, although he had a role in the movie, Murtagh's character development was ignored.
- In the movie Saphira says "I'm Saphira and you're my Rider", but in the book he goes to Brom before they could communicate and had him list off the names of past dragons. At the end he whispered his dragon's name, "Saphira".
- If the elves do not have the pointed ears, enhanced strength and speed, then how will Eragon be able to improve his own prowess? In the Blood-Oath celebration, Eragon's body was completely changed, making him as strong and fast as an elf. Arya appeared as to be just a normal human with a higher status.
- In the film, Galbatorix was attempting to kill Eragon as said by Brom in the film "...because the easiest way for the King to destroy your dragon is to kill you." In the book(s), Galbatorix was trying to simply capture Eragon.
- The Twins don't invade anyone's mind, and they don't test Eragon in magical prowess.
- Eragon discovers that Brom was a rider on his own in the movie, instead of Eragon finding it out as Brom dies.
- Since Oromis never contacted Eragon, it will be interesting how Eragon and Saphira find out how Galbatorix gets all his power in the third book, and how they will learn the things that Oromis originally taught him.
- Also, in the movie, they have hinted that there is only one egg, but in the book, there are two eggs, discounting Saphira who's already hatched.
- It is said in the book that Eragon has black hair but in the movie he has blond.
With this many errors and holes in the plot of the movie it seems unlikely to even make a sequel. Many others hope that they will make the Eragon movie again. This is most likely the only way an Eldest movie can be made.
[edit] Speculation
Edward Speleers has stated that he was training up for a second movie, and an unofficial report said something about the movie being filmed which is a good sign for many that Eldest The Movie, will be made. However, Garrett Hedlund is playing Louis in the movie Hectic (2008), so it is possible that they are waiting for "Murtagh" to come back. More information will be posted on this page as it comes in. According to IMDB website, John Malkovich has several movies in the making, all these movies with 2008 dates.
It was also said in a press release by 20th Century Fox that there will be a feature on the upcoming Eragon DVD called "Just The Beginning" that will give us a "postmortem look at what's to come in the film series".
It was rumored that Edward Speleers is to appear in the next three Inheritance movies, but it's uncertain on when the director will buy the rights for the films.
Due to the vast amounts of information Christopher Paolini puts into every book it will impossible for the movie makers to make a second movie that will coincide with the Eldest novel. They have taken too many liberties already and to patch the second movie in and get the same point across will be nothing short of a train wreck. So, what may happen is they take little things from both Eldest and Brisingr to make the second movie that will end with the same point but have a very different path to get there and then wait for Christopher Paolini to write the last book. Inheritance cycle was suppose to be Inheritance trilogy.
