The chapter starts out with Eragon thinking about Roran. He gets struck in the side, and quickly tells Trianna that the villagers on the ship are friends, not foes. The dwarves have just come for reinforcements. Eragon and Hrothgar enjoy a brief reunion and then they have to fight. All afternoon they are engaged in battle, until Eragon notices that flaming javelins are being fired from the Dragon Wing. Roran and all of Carvahall are helping with the battle. Soon afterward, the Empire sounds horns and drums, and a small wine-red dragon with a Rider on it appears out of the clouds. The mysterious dragon's rider kills Hrothgar with magic and Eragon becomes enraged. He and Saphira set off to kill this new threat. They meet in midair and battle. Saphira is forced to land. Eragon and the new rider fight on the ground, but Eragon becomes weak and Zar'roc is knocked from his hand. With growing horror Eragon tears off the helmet of the strange rider and is dismayed to find that it is Murtagh.
