Dragon egg
From Inheriwiki, the ever-growing Inheritance database
Dragon eggs were created when dragons reproduced. When in the wild, these eggs would hatch only when the conditions were satisfactory to a baby dragon's survival. However, when the dragons and elves made peace and established the Dragon Riders, a few eggs were given to the Riders each year. The Riders then cast a spell on the egg to allow it to only hatch when the dragon inside chose a human or elf who touched it. If the dragon accepted the person as his or her Rider, the egg would then hatch. Afterward, the person who first made contact with the dragon hatchling (ideally, the one the baby dragon chose as his/her Rider) would be connected to the dragon forever, linked in both the mind and the body. The person had no choice; the dragon and human were connected until death.
[edit] Description
Dragon Eggs were eggs that resembled stones or jewels, and contained a dragon that has already grown enough to last in the outside world. Dragon eggs were very hard to destroy, giving them a better chance of survival. Because of that, they could easily be mistaken for hard, polished rocks. When Eragon first found Saphira's egg, he was unsure of what it was and he took to to Merlock, a trader who visited Carvahall every winter with a group of Traders. Dragon eggs also matched the color of the dragon inside. There is only one unhatched egg left in existence, the green dragon egg in Galbatorix's clutches.
[edit] Role in the books
At the beginning of the Rider War there were three eggs left (blue, red, and a green egg), that all belonged to Galbatorix. The blue egg was stolen by Hefring, retrieved by Morzan, and stolen again by Brom. It was brought between the Varden and the elves so that it might hatch for someone. When Arya was attacked by Durza while bringing the egg to the Varden, she teleported it to Carvahall because Brom was there; it actually landed in the spine, where Eragon found it. The egg hatched producing a dazzling blue dragon who we know today a Saphira.
The red egg hatched sometime for Murtagh while he was in Uru'baen, giving birth to Thorn. The green egg has yet to be hatched, is the only remaining known dragon egg, and, to our knowledge, is in the possession of Galbatorix.
