Dûrgrimst Quan was one of the thirteen dwarf clans. They lived in Tarnag and were in charge of religious duties and maintaining dwarven tradition.[1] Gannel was the clan chief during Eragon's time.[1]

Role in Society[]

Durgrimst Quan is the smallest of all the dwarven clans, but due to their role as priests controllers of the afterlife, and reserves of gold they maintain a strong influence amongst the dwarven nation.[1] The seat of their authority is at Celbedeil,[1] which was built to emphasize their wealth and standing to all other dwarf clans.[citation needed]

Eragon met the leader of Durgrimst Quan and was taught the history of the dwarven race, as well as their rites and traditions by Gannel, who seemed dedicated to Hrothgar and friendly to Eragon, even presenting him with a magical necklace to prevent scrying.[2]

The Quan all also trained in their clan's traditional weapon of the Hûthvír, which the Quan viewed as only for dwarf use. However, one was won in a gambling match with Angela, who later wielded it in battles.[2]

Criticism[]

As the elves were nonreligious, Orik observed that they don't seem to hold with "muttering into the air for help."[1] Most notably, Arya routinely took up this criticism with the Quan, igniting a fierce argument with one the clan's priests each time she visited Tarnag.[1] Arya condemned the clan's use of wealth for their own "wishful thinking" rather than for the better of society or the Varden.[2]
