Compendiums are very rare and valuable scrolls of various topics written in the Ancient Language. They ranged in topics from geography and philosophy to various spells. It was said that if a magician owned one he would not part with it. Compendiums often contained words in the ancient language that few or no people knew, therefore making them valuable.

Tenga possessed seven compendiums that Eragon recalled. They could contain some of the "answers" to the questions that Tenga has been asking for many many years.

Angela, his former apprentice, could possess some compendiums, or be familiar with what the seven compendiums contain.

We have yet to see what role, if any, Compendiums will play in Book 4.
