The Black Hand was an elite group of magicians, trained by Galbatorix personally, and spies who worked for the Empire.

There is not much known about the Black Hand or its members. The Varden was largely unaware of its existance, until the time Trianna hunted down and entered the mind of one of the Black Hand's assassins, Drail, and discovered the Black Hand's existence.

Drail is the only known member of the Black Hand, and he was hunted down by Trianna and Du Vrangr Gata for trying to assassinate Nasuada. Drail commited suicide by magic before they were able to extract any real useful information from him. It is believed that many of the members of the Black Hand may have been forced to join by the Empire.

It is noteworthy that Selena, Eragon's mother was known as Morzan's Black Hand. It is currently unknown if she was affiliated with Galbatorix's Black Hand in any way.

[edit] Duties and Functions of the Black Hand

First, the Black Hand functioned as an arm of the Imperial Army, specializing magical combat. It is known that some of the Black Hand's members were magicians because when Trianna found Drail, he committed suicide by magic before Trianna could extract much information from his mind. Secondly, the Black Hand carried out special operations for Galbatorix and the Wyrdfell. These operations included assassinations and espionage.

Examples of the efforts of the Black Hand against the forces opposed to Galbatorix were the following: One, the attempted assassination of the Varden leader, Nasuada in Surda by Drail. Two, the Black Hand spied on King Orrin and the Varden.

The Black Hand was a secret nationalist organization in Serbia before the first World War. Members of the Black Hand assassinated the Austrio-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914.
